Blackpool Lightworks, renowned for their iconic illuminations, approached me to develop 3D designs for an extraordinary display featuring five giant illuminated fiberglass sea creatures. These sculptures were co-created in collaboration with international designer Jack Irving, who was commissioned to design these captivating pieces for a full Odyssey experience along the Blackpool promenade. Each sculpture stands an impressive 10 meters high, making them the largest of their kind in the UK.
The sculptures were to be 10 meters tall, requiring detailed and precise design work to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
Translating Jack Irving’s 2D visuals and verbal input into accurate 3D models that captured his creative vision.
Designing free-flowing, organic forms that were both visually stunning and manufacturable.
Ensuring the designs could be manufactured using the facilities at Lightworks, specifically for creating full-size polystyrene and fiberglass patterns.
Engaged in numerous one-on-one meetings with Jack Irving to understand his vision and gather detailed feedback.
Used Jack’s 2D visuals and verbal directions as a basis for creating the 3D designs.
Utilized a VR headset and Gravity Sketch design software to create free-form surface models.
This technology allowed me to visualize the designs in real-time and collaborate with Jack Irving interactively, making adjustments on the fly.
Focused on ensuring the organic structures were both visually exceptional and manufacturable.
Developed multiple iterations of the designs, refining them based on ongoing feedback from Jack Irving and the Lightworks team.
Ensured that the designs adhered to manufacturing constraints, allowing for seamless translation into full-size patterns.
Final Design and Manufacturing:
Delivered detailed 3D surface models ready for the Lightworks factory to manufacture.
The factory used these models to create full-size polystyrene and fiberglass patterns, ensuring the sculptures’ structural integrity and aesthetic quality.
Outcome
The project was a significant success, resulting in the creation of five stunning, illuminated sea creatures now featured prominently at Blackpool Lightworks events, Christmas celebrations, and during the illumination season. The sculptures have become a major attraction, showcasing the collaborative effort and advanced design techniques used to bring Jack Irving’s vision to life.
Client Satisfaction: Blackpool Lightworks and Jack Irving were extremely pleased with the final designs, which faithfully captured the intended artistic vision.
Public Reception: The sculptures have been well-received by the public, enhancing the appeal of Blackpool’s illuminations.
Ongoing Collaboration: The success of this project has strengthened the relationship with Blackpool Lightworks, potentially leading to future collaborative opportunities.
This case study demonstrates the power of innovative design tools and close collaboration in creating large-scale public art installations that captivate and inspire.
