The Project

Capella is an industry leader in paint systems, supplying various paint products, primers, and fillers to a wide range of industries. They offer two types of aerosol spray cans designed for both one-component and two-component paints, ideal for on-site touch-ups. These aerosol cans are pre-filled with propellant, allowing customers to fill them with paint using Capella’s paint filling machines.

Historically, Capella sourced these filling machines from an external manufacturer, adhering to the manufacturer’s specifications. However, Capella decided to produce their own machines in-house to have complete control over the design and specifications, and to improve upon the current technology. The conventional method of filling the cans involves an air piston that drives the paint into the can under pneumatic force, which has several inherent problems.

The Task

I was tasked with developing a new machine from start to finish. We proposed several concepts aimed at eliminating common issues found in traditional machines. After selecting the most promising concept, we created a working prototype to demonstrate the new design. This prototype was rigorously tested in-house at Capella’s factory.

Deliverables

Deliverables included a comprehensive manufacturing data pack, complete with 2D manufacturing drawings, 3D CAD models, and a Bill of Materials (BOM). Additionally, we procured all necessary parts and leveraged our network of contacts to facilitate ongoing manufacturing.

Outcome

The new machine has been a resounding success, enabling Capella to have their proprietary machine tailored to their specific needs and standards.
