Ticket Monster

The Ticket monster is a machine used in arcades that counts and destroys redemption tickets won from ticket redemption machines. The request to design the machine came from the largest arcade in Europe. The brief given to Aximo was simple – design and build a machine that works .

Aximo studied the issues their clients had with their current machines, with knowledge that they could design a much better product. The main issues with the current machines was the difficulty staff had operating them and the cost of spare parts.

The biggest challenge in designing the new machine was that the user is not only untrained but also highly likely to be a young child. Various problems existed in the feeding of tickets into the machine; users often had a tendency to pull them back out, insert them folded over, insert tickets that were not won in that arcade and sometimes attempt to purposefully defraud the machine.

A simple, yet high quality cabinet design was chosen, defying the majority of comparable machines that were constructed from MDF. The cabinet was manufactured from 2mm steel, giving it strength, durability and demonstrably higher quality appearance to the buyers.

The ticket mechanism that pulls the tickets into the machine past our optical interface needed to be well-built, easy to access and designed to keep cost of replacement parts to a minimum. The body of the unit was built from CNC machined billet aluminium and the belts ran on roller bearings. To gain access if a ticket or any foreign object got into the mechanism, all was needed to do was to pull a sprung pin plunger out and simply slide the optical assembly out. Other manufactured machines usually required the use of tools to remove screws, then correct replacement and alignment of parts to ensure correct operation. This often resulted in the units not being reassembled correctly and resultantly, constant issues for the staff.

One of the main issues Aximo identified with other manufacturer’s machines was the lack of customer enrichment – they generally only had a simple small display to show the amount of tickets counted. Aximo decided that if they built the machine using a computer as the main processor they could fit in a high quality video screen to enrich the user experience. The other major benefit using the computer was providing a simple and intuitive experience for the staff, during setup or another occasion where back-end data is required – features lacking in other machines  that would generally only have switches or a limited number of buttons to allow programming and setup.

The final challenge was making all the components work reliably and at high speed. Aximo chose a combination of embedded electronics to do some of the work and then built the rest into the computer program. The end result of electronics and computer both processing different information allows for a very flexible system, able to process multiple bar-coded redemption tickets in ways the other machines are unable to. This ensured the machine was not only secure but much more capable than other machines on the market. The capabilities of the machine were expanded due the nature of its new design.

Due to the quality and uniqueness of this machine, many operators choose to exclusively use this machine on their site. The success of the machine in the UK and Europe is reflected in sales figures in the thousands.
